FBI vs Apple

I get it. There does not exist a less villainous iPhone than that of a dead terrorist who killed innocent people. The government waited until absolutely nobody could blame them for NEEDING and wanting access to THIS PARTICULAR LOCKED IPHONE. It’s no accident then that Tim Cook and Apple were asked to not only unlock it for the FBI, and to build software expressly for that purpose.

A 5th grader can look online in a number of locations YouTube and find out how to circumvent the passcode on an iPhone.

But the government is bound by laws and regulations that probably makes doing that compromise any future indictments or actions. Ok, bummer.

Having just watched the Oscar nominated Spotlight last weekend, I am aware of creative tactics and procedures used by the attorneys to gain access to sealed information in that case Spotlight.

I know for a fact there are many really REALLY smart people employed by our government in multiple departments. If the government ONLY wanted access to this one phone belonging to this one person, there are options out there.

Or, is it the 256 bit encryption the government is really after.

The Truth About Donald Trump’s Narcissism

Spot on!

TIME

Even as the comet that is The Donald continues to streak across the political sky—as babes peer in wonder out their windows, dogs bay in fear in the night and scholars debate the source of the great apparition—it’s worth taking a moment to feel some compassion for the man who’s causing all the mischief.

The fact is, it can’t be easy to wake up every day and discover that you’re still Donald Trump. You were Trump yesterday, you’re Trump today, and barring some extraordinary development, you’ll be Trump tomorrow.

There are, certainly, compensations to being Donald Trump. You’re fabulously wealthy; you have a lifetime pass to help yourself to younger and younger wives, even as you get older and older—a two-way Benjamin Button dynamic that is equal parts enviable and grotesque. You own homes in Manhattan; Palm Beach; upstate New York; Charlottesville, Virginia; and Rancho Palos Verdes, California; and you’re…

What’s Left of the Past: The Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar in Sarasota, Florida

Love it too!

...said the Fox

Taking my dad to visit a local institution that has withstood the ravages of ferocious growth. Some things remain intact in my hometown…

It’s a different town. That’s all I can say when anyone asks me what I think of Sarasota today. When I grew up here, there were few buildings higher than two stories. It was affordable, or at least affordable enough that a family of four could come down and start over in a stilt house on a shell drive in a part of town so close to the water that retiring baby boomers are willing to shell out half their life savings to live there now. Going back is strange, particularly because I haven’t lived there for almost two decades. It’s not a bad thing or a good thing. It’s just different.

When I go home, I go back for family. My 95 year-old grandmother who has…

Serial Subject Adnan Syed’s Story Will Continue in New Podcast

TIME

Serial may have ended in December, but Adnan Syed’s story will continue.

A new podcast starting Monday will delve into the strange case “in greater detail, from an investigatory perspective instead of a narrative one,” The New York Times reports.

Syed, 34, has spent the past 15 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee after being sentenced to life plus 30 years in 2000. To this day, he maintains his innocence.

The case gained national attention last year after reporter Sarah Koenig made it the focus of her wildly popular podcast Serial. According to Apple, it was the most downloaded podcast of 2014 and the fastest ever to reach five million downloads.

Though Koenig’s investigation is, for now, over – the next season of Serial will focus on something else entirely – Syed’s story and his ongoing legal travails remain very much alive. In…

Why Apple’s HBO Deal Isn’t a Streaming TV Game-Changer (Yet)

Cool!

TIME

Monday’s news that HBO is coming to Apple devices without a cable subscription is likely to make fans of HBO’s massively popular Game of Thrones say “Hodor.” Well, either that or “Hodor!,” but definitely not the disappointed and downtrodden “hodor.”

Why? This partnership could be a game-changer the likes of which will open the flood gates for television channels to flee the grip of cable companies — but there’s also the possibility that for most HBO-watchers, it will do nothing at all.

While HBO already has a streaming service in HBO Go, access to it is limited to users who are already paying for HBO through a cable package. The new offering, HBO Now, can be purchased by anybody, cable subscriber or not, for $14.99 a month. For the first three months, you’ll only be able to sign up on an Apple device.

That last part — the fact…
